We all have imperfections, we all scar, we all get blemishes. Its normal, and we shouldn’t feel insecure about it either. It took me years to embrace my skin. I used to have TERRIBLE skin, and would feel so anxious about it that I would pile on the makeup- which in a way was actually making it worse.

I began a proper skincare routine and STILL, my skin wasn’t getting any better. I was under the impression that if I used a £50 cleanser, my skin would magically clear up when in reality that isn’t the case.
go The condition of your skin is dependent on so many factors, not just your ‘skincare’. So if you are following a good skincare routine, using targeted treatments and your skin still isn’t considered perfect in your eyes – I understand the frustration. I understand the frustration of doing everything right for your skin and it still not looking its best.
Thats where this blogpost comes in. Over the years I started to take note of every aspect of my life to figure out what was breaking me out. I followed a strict skincare regime for a good year- and my skin still looked awful. It only occurred to me after such a long time that good skin isn’t all about products. Its more than that. Sometimes the cause of our breakouts are things we would never have thought of.
So here are the top tips and tricks I found helped me clear my skin up and keep it looking healthy and blemish free!

Yep, you guessed it. Drink Water. Wow sophie, how original. But theres a reason why everyone tells you do it and thats because it really makes a difference in how your skin looks.
Our skin is an organ made up of cells, and just like all the other cells we have in our body- its largely made up of water. Our skin needs water in order to function. Remove water from our skin and you’re left with skin thats dry, tight and flaky. Lack of hydration can wreak havoc on your skin, so replenish it with as much water as you can.
I tend to drink around 2 litres of water a day. And if you hate drinking water, try infused water (pop some slices of fruit into your water bottle).

Your phone. The one thats in your hand right now, or sitting beside you? Yeah- CLEAN IT. Guys, my phone had been breaking me out for so long and I’m so silly for not noticing because it hoards so much bacteria on it! I clean my phone every single day with some rubbing alcohol that I bought from amazon.
Tip Number 3
Change your pillowcases WEEKLY. I cannot tell you how much of a difference this makes with your skin. And don’t throw your pillowcases on the floor when you’re doing your bed up. Seriously. The pillow you sleep on, keep that as clean as possible. Clean pillowcases are vital and honestly ever since I started doing this – the amount of breakouts I was having reduced massively! Which takes us onto the next tip…
Tip Number 4
Tea Tree Spray. LOL…Yes, I’m that extra. What’s Tea Tree Spray? Its basically filtered water in a spray bottle with a few drops of tea tree oil in it. I spray it all over my pillow about 30 minutes before bed and it acts like an antibacterial. I’ve tried and tested this, whenever I slack on my tea tree spray – my skin gets worse. There’s just something about knowing you’re laying your head down to sleep on clean bacteria free pillows every night that makes this tip really addictive. Tea tree does smell quite strong so if you’re sensitive to the scent I wouldn’t recommend this.
Tip Number 5
Don’t touch your face unnecessarily. I’m not saying this tip alone is going to cure acne, but honestly the amount of bacteria that builds up on our hands during day to day activities – you do not then want to transfer that to your skin. Avoid touching your face as much as possible (Auntie-jees reading this who come stroke our faces with your saalan hands- TAKE NOTE).
Tip Number 6
DO NOT SLEEP WITH MAKEUP ON. < This is in capitals because I’m literally screaming it at you through your screen. DON’T. Please please don’t! It’s terrible for your skin, and your skin deserves better treatment than that. You only get one face, treat it well. Remove your makeup every night with a proper cleansing routine- your skin will thank you for it.
If you’re super super lazy and tend to sleep with makeup on- try keeping some cotton pads and a micellar water next to your bed on those emergency days when you’re tempted to neglect your skin and wake up with panda eyes. Atleast its better than nothing.
Tip Number 7
Eat well. If you’re drinking fizzy drinks everyday and you can’t remember the last time you drank a cup of water, re-evaluate your life choices. Theres nothing wrong with a can of coke every now and again but your skin is a reflection of you. If you smoke, eat super unhealthy and generally don’t take your health seriously it will reflect upon your skin. Aim to make choices that will benefit your body in the best way possible and in turn – your skin will benefit too.
